We just found out of a huge danger to DMD kids that we were previously unaware. A Fat Embolism is when fat from inside the bone is released into the bloodstream following a break. These embolisms could trigger strokes, heart attacks and respiratory failure should they enter the brain, heart or lungs. Please get the word out to every parent of a Muscular Dystrophy kid.

What are you supposed to do about it?
Can't do anything about it except know of the dangers and keep an eye out for the symptoms. If a DMD kid gets a major break they should be kept under medical supervision for evidence of stroke, heart attack/failure or pulmonary failure.
Although rare, Fat Embolism Syndrome (FES) should be considered if shortness of breath or neurological symptoms develop after a fall/fracture/trauma. - See more at: http://www.parentprojectmd.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Care_area_o...
