Several years ago when I had a non-profit organization for muscular dystrophy awareness, we did a cookbook to raise money for it. We did pretty good.

This year for the Alumni Association I am running we are doing a Vegetarian Cookbook. It is going to the publisher this week. It will have about 600 recipes and a 3 ring binder hard back (padded) with lots of goodies inside. It is part of our fundraiser for the Association. I am working with one of the best publishers.

However, for some time I have wanted to do one for PPMD. I think we can do this together as a group. It will be very easy. We can enter our recipes onto an online recipe database. Anyone can go in and put their recipes for any of the categories- unlimited recipes. The cost of the cookbook is based on how many recipes are in the cookbook. PPMD is a non-profit and because of this, we have a 90 day credit (up to 90 days to pay the publisher back). That is not the hard part, because I'm more than sure we can seel the cookbooks with no problem. We can even get an ISBN# on it to sell in stores.

My cookbook for the Association will be out by this Thanksgiving. I am also involved with another cookbook for Aikdo Meadows, another non-profit (for domestic abuse) that I run with a good friend.that will be out this spring.

Before we get started on this, I like to do a quick survey to see how many people would like to be part of this. Be part of a team to make sure this does succeed. We can begin this process right away or we can begin after the holidays.

Would you like to join me? We would need a Chariperson and a few on the committee. Let me knwo what you think!

Thanks!
Dee

Hi Dee,

My friend Nancy and I are planning on developing a cookbook ' Recipes for Our Sons' with proceeds going to PPMD.  Nancy's young nephew was recently diagnosed with Duchenne.  5 friends and I were successful last year in putting together a book for Make a Wish - we made $10K in just a few months - we worked with Morris Cookbooks.  Nancy and I would like to do the same for PPMD.  I see this post is about a year old  . . did you ever do your book?   I've got ideas about logistics . .  Can we talk??

Thanks !  Rosanne

Rosanne....Go for it!!!  I didn't do it because Kim told me to wait on it ...so I put it on the back burner. But if you all think you can do it...go for it. I have lots of recipes I can contribute to as well.

If you are going through Morris Cookbook, make sure that you can send them payments ASAP after the book is publish because we have not been successful in selling the vegetarian bookbook.  So make sure you do get the ISBN number so you can sell them in book stores, etc..etc...The more recipes the better.   However, they do charge for extra pages over the "free" ones they already give you.   But not much.  But if you do have extra pages, make sure they are well worth it.

And make sure the cover is very attractive along with recipes.  And personally, I wouldn't put names as contributors with the recipes  but added it as one of the index names in the back. Just a suggestion to help attrack the book more for more selling.  You can email me or I'll email you my number if you want to call.

And don't use spiral books.  use either 3 ringers or (damn my mind went blank to what it is called) .  Sprials are to "unprofessional" to me. you need to make sure it looks professional.

I think this will be great. I'm 100% with you on this but NOT as a creditor.   I can help you collect recipes or contribute a lot that is in our cookbook with no problem.

All thumbs up!

Dee

I am also on SKYPE (make sure you have the latest version 5.0) my screen name is dee.bird if you want to do a conference call and we all can talk about it.   I'll be glad to contribute many of my recipes if that is helpful.  but I do have some good suggestions to help the book to sell in book stores and more!  352 331 9971  if you want to talk first.

Good Evening - I do not have SKYPE setup yet - but I'd love to participate in a conference call - with Rosanne and you.  I did check with Ryan from PPMD and he supported our efforts. Can you provide a few times you'd be available and we can setup a call - preferrable in the evenings?  We'd love to hear your thoughts!  Nancy (Rosanne referrenced me in her posting)

I just talked to Nancy & Rose and they seem to be on board...I would like to make one comment becuase not very many people know about this.  Becareful how you title the cookbook, as if it is always "for our son's"  then the girls with DMD will feel offended that you didn't include them.   There are many girls that does have DMD too and if you want to include them in raising funds, then please be careful how you title the cookbook.   You don't want to "offend" anyone or upset them if you exclude gender.   Yes there are more boys with it, but you have to remember DMD affects boys and girls and we are finding a cure for ALL the kids affected with it.

Just a suggestion.

Dee

Great point!!  We'll keep working on the title and marketing.  Right now focusing on gathering the recipes - while working isn't as busy.  Once we get closer to completion - we'll set up another call to discuss the cover, title, designs and marketing. I do appreciate your input - this is all new to me - and I honestly do not want to offend anyone!!

Your "Cook for a Cure" is a strong possible alternative title

Please keep in mind - we tenatively choose Recipes for Our Sons - so when distributing outside the PPMD committee - we thought it would assist in marketing Run for Our Sons and other events.  But we're flexible - just trying to assist in fundraising and awareness.

Ahhh!!!ohhh!! well that makes sense!!   but i still hate it when PPMD excludes girls too.  but if you are using it to sponsor the RUN FOR OUR SON'S then that makes perfect sense of that title!  lol!! gotcha!  (wink)   lol  safe hugs! Dee
