How can we estimate the calorie needs of a nearly non-ambulant child who is 16 Years old.I have been trying to find information about the optimum amount of calories to feed my son who is suffering from DMD,but there isn't much information. Are there no trials conducted to estimate the nutritional needs of our children. My son takes prednisone,so it is hard to maintain his weight and he is very short for his age only 140 cms.I think this short height is due to his osteoporosis. Can other parents please share their tips regarding weight control. Thanks in advance.

I too was on the look out for a very long time for a good nutritionist for my son  who is non ambulatory plus a vegetarian. You find broad general guidelines about it ( read on the cure duchenne organization ) but you have to work it out with a nutritionist /dietitian and an endocrinologist I feel as each childs case differs. contact the Muscular Dystrophy  Associations in India -there is one in Solan HP  and one at Chennai ( i think), if they can suggest to find a good nutritionist  who can chalk out an individual plan according to the needs of your child.
