Last week you heard from my friend Kim Powers. She and her husband have jumped into this year’s 9th Annual Coach To Cure MD program on September 24 feet first, challenging coaches from universities around the country to not just raise awareness this year, but raise money to help us end Duchenne. Like so many of you, Coach To Cure MD resonates with their family and is an annual event that colleagues, friends, and family can participate in.

College football has always held a special place in my heart. Some of my fondest memories of my boys are when they gathered around the TV on a Saturday afternoon in autumn, screaming for Notre Dame to score or at least not let the other team score. I listened from the kitchen putting together the greasy snacks that must accompany any football game. Was I invested in the game? Did I care who won? No, not really. The happiness these moments brought into our home, the unity it brought to our family, the memories…that was the victory.

Often when we tell the people in our lives about Duchenne, they want to help. They want to do something. Coach To Cure MD can be just that thing. It’s become such an easy way for people to raise awareness, fund research, and have a great time in the process. I mean, if they’re watching college football on September 24 anyway, why not make a difference in the process?

Participation in Coach To Cure MD has never been easier:

From a traditional cook-out tailgate party at the game to a house party with friends and family, or even a gathering at a favorite local restaurant or bar, a tailgate party is a great option. PPMD can provide you with some great materials to make your party all the more festive and informative.

Create a Team Fundraising Page to encourage your entire fan base and local community to support Coach to Cure MD on behalf of your school (see an example here).

Some schools request families to be part of their Coach To Cure MD Day. We need YOU to be there on the field representing OUR team! See if there are any schools near you to join their game day experience.

Will you help us #TackleDuchenne?

Once again, my family will celebrate Coach To Cure MD on September 24, deeply prideful of every patch we see on TV. Knowing that this community is raising awareness and putting Duchenne in the spotlight.

Will you join our team?
