I heard a radio talk show with Larry Hagman as a guest. They were talking about organ donors and how much in need they are. Larry made a statement about why wouldn't people donate their organs after they are gone, they are done using them after all so why not save lives with them. Organ transplantation has become a major "cure" for many illnesses that have no cure and because of that there is a much bigger demand. But yet people still are weary to sign away their organs once they are gone. Currently 18 people die each day waiting for an organ, many more die that haven't donated their organs. There is a simple solution, these 18 people should not die each day when there are organs to be had. Many of our boys will most likely need a heart transplant one day. It is a matter of time when diaphragms will be transplanted. I would not want to be a parent of a child who died waiting on an organ and thus be one of those preventable statistics. Treating these disorders are hard enough, why do we complicate things even more by hording our organs even after we are done with them? This should not be an issue but it is and that is really shameful. If you feel the same way that I do then register as an organ donor, right here, and maybe we can make a difference...

While there are some people whose religious practices require that a body be buried intact, I also don't understand why more people don't make arrangements for their organs to be donated. In addition to filling out the organ donor card with your driver's license, those of us who have "living wills" that address how medical decisions are to be made for us when we are unable to do so should make sure that the document clearly provides that our organs can be donated if that's what we in fact expect and intend.

I love your blog and couldn't agree more. I have always been an organ donor and try to promote it as much as possible, and have a hard time understanding why someone wouldn't. Once you're gone what do you need them for? Hopefully a few more people will register thanks to you.

Good blog and reminder. I had to go for my drivers license renewal today and this time made sure I checked that box.
