We have 2 sons - our oldest has DMD (22 yr old). Bill attends the local community college, has a handicapped accessible van (set up for him to drive), works part-time at Wal-Mart and has an active social life. He is in good health and makes the most of every day.
Name(s) of child(ren)/individual(s) with Duchenne:
Bill is very handsome. With the blonde hair and light eyes he reminds me of my Simon, who is almost 11 and doing very well. The only complaint right now is the lack of growth on Deflazacort (taken daily). I think you said that Bill walked until 16? Was he much shorter than his peers? Did it bother him much, and if so, how did you help him along?
I have often wondered if our boys would be able to drive, and your experience lets me know that it is possible for some. That's great freedom!
Have a good day Susan, and tell Bill that a little guy is looking up to him as a cool teenage role-model.
