As I sit here thinking about my 16th year of teaching (which begins tomorrow..Sept. 1), I am thankful for all the support from my middle school colleagues and kids. This summer has been wonderful and scary all at the same time. The Denver conference was amazing, and after it was over, I got speaking gigs at Acceleron (brilliant people work there, and work hard for all DMD boys), and also at the 2nd annual Becker Conference at Mass. General Hospital. I spent time with friends at my lake, as well… Continue

So, when I stopped walking several years ago, I thought my world was over. The planet is not made for someone sitting down. I mentally crashed, and found a counselor who had experience dealing with adults with chronic physical my case, this was Becker MD. He did offer me strength and perspective, but one of the funny things (and if you are reading this and you know me...then....) at a session was when he compared chronic illness to someone standing on a stairway and looking down.… Continue

Thanks to everyone for their words of encouragement at this year's conference. It's funny how many people tell me I give them strength, when it is actually all of YOU that give me the strength to present with honesty, compassion, and humor. We all have one life to live. In one of my favorite movies: The Shawshank Redemption, the character of Red utters an important line:

Get busy living, or get busy dying.

I choose living. We must all see the glass as… Continue

Now I can put that cute face to a name...Should have known at conference that was you! I can only hope and pray that my son has as great of outlook on life as you do! Take care and give mom a kiss today. Nice meeting you at conference. I always wanted to meet this face and it really does go with the personality. I talked to you a few times and after dinner you had your picture with the Rose...

Pat, I didn't meet you at the Conference but I should have!
I think I gave you dopey thank you for your part on-stage. I'm the "helicopter mom". Anyhow just want to reiterate that I am so glad you reminded me to see my kid with a future and a life AND that yes, he'll fall in love and all that stuff (but I tell you - he'll have to get someone else to position him!). Sometimes moms need to pull their heads out of their backsides. Anyhow, nice to not meet you.

Hi Pat (boy), Our Helen (Doug's guardian angel and best PT in the whole world) said she saw you in Philly and that you are still a "hoot". When you coming to Oz again? 2009? Start saving! Doug gave up the harmonica (before he really started) but now he's singing in a choir on Monday nights - still music, right?
fond regards Deb

Hi Pat: I really enjoyed your all did a wonderful job! You should get a talk show - you have a great attitude and sense of humor - thanks for answering all our questions with such honesty. I always see you at the PPMD conferences, but I don't think we have met. Keep up the good work and take care,
