Hi Misty,,, What we found Dillon had difficult with was he had to make adjustments to our table so his plate was closer to him so we just put a wooden box for him so he could feed himself, it work out great..Also he had issues with going to the bathroom so we set up a pail with a hose so he could go to the bathroom as this is difficult for them..Not sure if you have had his wheelchair adjust for after the operation but you should check into it. Dillon got out of the hospital and his was not done, so we had to prop him with pillows and the ride home for him was difficult and not to comfortable. It took them to August 2009 before they finally got his wheelchair fitted properly..I also got a ROHO mattress to put in the center of his bed for more comfort for him. He lays on his sides and when so I put a feather pillow behind his back and a pillow between his knees this helps him with the pressure he did this in the hospital and still does it now. I have also set up a door bell so when he is in bed he is able to buzz it for me to come. I hope that this helps you out and if I think of anything else I will let you know...

Hi Misty,,, My son is 17 and had the spine surgery in December 2008. I was worried in the beginning when I first found out and the day off. Dillon did wonderful during the surgery and was only in the hospital for 7 days. All boys are different and deal with things differently...My son was to sleep the next day after surgery and only slept 2 hours and the following day he was up sitting in his wheelchair and surprise to me he was released in 7 days not 11 as he was suppose to be in for. I had attendant care come in my home after surgery and to remove his staples..I felt bad for him he was limited to what he could do but his recovery was excellent..I do not know where the doctor gets off telling you that recovery will be hell, that is not right..Another mother that I know that just went through this is Sabrina Kaufman (both her boys had this done weeks apart..She is on my friends list...I talked to her before her boys went in for surgery.. There are things that you need to make sure you have all done before he comes home..I learned as I went as I did not talk to anyone who had gone through it..If you would like to call me and talk let me know, I am here for you in anyway possible...Take Care Penny

Do you see an mda doctor? If so, where do you go and how do you like the doctor?
