The boys still used their joysticks, however they had a 4 button quad they used for their tilt, recline and power elevating legrests. it would just lay in their lap, or they would hold it in their hands.  See about the possibility of using an arm trough on the side with the joystick to keep the arm from sliding off the armrest.  What kind of Invacare chair are you getting?
