I live in SE Michigan.and my step-son would like to live on his own. There is pretty much no housing for him except maybe a group home with cognitively impaired old men or a nursing home. Any leads on finding suitable housing for a 21 yr old with DMD?

I have the same problem here in Massachusetts, nursing homes or group homes that are not appropriate. My son is 30, Vent dependent 24/7 with DMD. He is currently waiting for his own subsidized apartment. I will live with him until we can find nurses and  personal care attendants to assist him.  I have learned to be creative in his quest for independence. I have found trying to find independent living opportunities for adult DMD guys is almost impossible.

UPDATE: We found a home with a mother-in-law suite or studio that is separate from our house but only about 30 feet away. It has a small kitchen and an accessible-ish bathroom with a walk-in closet for the shower wheelchair storage and a large living area/bedroom.He is able to come over to the main house since we installed a few threshold ramps. We are so happy to have created a home for our son that he can call his own. We are very close to check on him at night or help with anything else he may need. The rest of our family has privacy from all his caregivers. This sort of living situation seems to be working so Jonah can have the independence of a 21-yr old with support necessary for a guy with Duchenne's.

I also found a website for Granny Pod. I thought this would be a good option albeit expensive option too.

That is awesome !! so happy for you all !
