Toileting Issue at School
Can anyone give some suggestions about toileting at school. Our son is 12 years old and is no longer ambulatory and can not support his own weight. Can anyone give us some suggestions as to how the school transfers your son from the wheelchair to the toilet. Our son is getting to heavy for the school personnel to lift him. Is there a lift that works well for this situation? Is there any easy way to get his pants down while in the lift? Any info would be appreciated.

This is a physical therapist ?? The PT at his school can help with that. Give them a try.

i am curious to see what ideas you get, my son is 12 and we are having the same issue. plus he doesn't want anyone at school to help so it is either that i go to school and help or he doesn't go at all during the day.

can he use a travel urinal on his own in the bathroom? does he have an aide?

He uses a travel urinal and he has an aide. However it is getting more and more difficult to transfer him from his wheelchair to the toilet. He also needs help getting his pants down. The school officals are very helpful and willing, they are just looking for the best way to accomplish the task.

Justin uses a urinal at school and stays in his chair while using it. He wears "break away" pants(basketball pants), and he unbuttons the buttons himself, uses the urinal, then covers himself while his aide buttons them back up. He hasnt worn underwear in years as it was just too much trouble. He didnt like the no underwear at first, but once he adjusted, he loves it. If he needs to have a bowel movement, there is a hoyer lift at school that they use. While he is sitting in his chair, they unbutton both sides of his pants and one person holds them out of the way, the sling is placed under him, he is transferred to the toile, left alone to do his business, then the aides come back in, reposition him, transfer him back to his chair, rebutton him and he is good to go. Its a time consuming process, but it works for Justin so it works for us and them!

Just curious as to what bathroom they use at school - staff or student bathroom? A hoyer and a wheelchair take up a fair amount of space so I'm wondering if they have a special bathroom that accommodates this?

Justin uses the bathroom in the nurses office. Our nurses office is fairly large and his hoyer lift stays in there. It has a large bathroom with a roll in shower also, so Justins chair fits in there along with his helpers and the lift. he uses that bathroom even when he just needs to use the urinal. The nurses office is located where all the other school offices are. One other thing...Justins aides are all women, but they have one male coach who offered to help with transfers to and from the toilet and to help Justin clean up if needed. It makes Justin happy to have a man to help out since he is hitting that puberty stage!

They use a staff bathroom that is large enough for his chair and a lift. I guess they were just wondering what would be the best lift to use and how it works with getting his pants down.

I work as a CNA at a nursing home. We use a Stature lift made by Hoyer. It's completely electric. We are able to do all total assist transfers by ourselves with this. They do make slings that have commode openings. You would take the pants down or off first before the transfer to the toilet. To put a sling under someone in a chair though would require 2 people. Difficult to do with one.

It's called a sit to stand lift. No need for a sling. The person does not need to weight bare.

My son's school installed a Guldmann's lift along with a large table to support his aide assisting with preparing him for using the toilet. The system followed him through his school career and also benefited other disabled students as well. I had it written into his 504 plan and we had no issues with the school. At our first meeting I brought a tape and the representative for the product with ample information. It was wonderful for both his aide and other aides. The student was comfrotable and confident with the transfers. We have one in our home and love it.
Note: This started when he entered 6th grade and followed him through school even when we moved to another county. It is important to have it in his records for that reason alone. If you like and I can find it I would be happy to send you the 504 plan request for it. He has been out of school for 2 years now, but I am sure I can find his folder. Get the PT on board. They will have to train the aides at school.

We are in the process of attempting to register our son as 504. He is currently in private school and hasn't needed that designation yet, but will starting next fall. Would you mind sending the 504 request to me? It would come in really handy!
