My son has been complaining on and off for about 6 months of left lower side pain that radiates to his back..I have been to his Dr and was told that it was constipation. Take it as it comes, however Cade is on Miralax and goes regularly. Now this past month we have been to the ER twice because he is in agonizing pain and screams at the top of his lungs that it hurts and nothing I do relieves the pain. 1st ER visit I was told that it was constipation, 2nd ER visit showed enlarged left kidner(which he has had since birth). I went to his kidney specialist who did three different tests and now he says that he does have a larger left kidney, however there is no reason for him to believe that the problem can be caused by this. Any one have a similar issue, I am kind of out of ideas as to what it could be. I just know that I wasnt to get to the bottom of the issues because I never want to go through this again!!

Could he have kidney stones? If they are small enough to pass the pain will only lasts until he passes it. I only mention it because we have been through three procedures this year for 3 large kidney stones, but he has passed smaller ones in the past. It might be worth asking your specialist.
Thank you! I will check, they said that he did not have a stone this time, but I am wondering if it may have been passing so It did not show on the cat scan.
Amanda, your son looks young, but.....my daughter had left side pain for years that would send us to the ER and they ALWAYS thought it was her appendix. She had so many CAT scans that the radiologist told us not to do any more as it would damage her eggs from the radiation! She was admitted once to the hospital to try to figure it out and they said it was some rare virus that took 2 weeks to get test results back from...we treated it as if it was with antibiotics....still the pain returned. Oh, the appendix NEVER showed anything!
Finally we went to a GI doc who at the age of 10 checked her gallbladder. The test was negative for problems, but he had her 'run' the 'frosted flakes w/skim milk test " where that is all she could eat for 2 days (there is no fat in it and if there is no pain, then maybe it is the gallbladder that is the problem). After that he told us that he felt SURE it was the gallbladder and scheduled surgery to remove it. Sure enough, my 10 y/o daughter had a gallbladder that looked like an 80 y/o overweight man...it was gray and disintegrating (now, remember the test they run for this was normal). Her pain was in the lower left of her belly, but it was not at a pinpoint location (like appendicitus)...it was just in that area...sometimes, if I recall, it traveled to her back.
I am not saying this is what is going on with your son...but maybe something to look into...it sure sounds similar.
Good luck! I know how frustrating this is!!!!
Thank you!! This information helps out..i questioned about the gallbladder and they said that the pain would be on the right..so I will have to double check with the Dr..is there any test that they can do to see if the gall bladder is bad?
There is a gallbladder test, it is done with a dye and they watch to see how it moves through the system. I don't recall what it is called! Sorry!

That is ok..thank you for the info!!
Lori,

I'm confused, why would the doctors think your daughters pain was from the appendix. That's on the lower right side.

Janine
Because I am an idiot!~!!!! Her pain was around her appendix! So, I guess it was lower right if that is where the appendix is! She actually did end up having her appendix out (emergency while on vacation!) and the doc in Colorado thought with all her probs it was absurd they didn't take the appendix at teh same time as gallbladder...but....

Sorry for the mistake!!!
