Wyatt will be aging out of the early intervention program in our state when he turns 3 in Aug. The school did his eval and said that at this time he would not qualify for PT or OT. I guess I thought with his diagnosis that he would automatically qualify atleast for someone to monitor him at school and making sure he is doing okay through the day. He will not be going into the school system til he is 5 because he is at a great little school he goes to now, which is very small and he is watched very closely. Just trying to get my thoughts together.

PT & OT in the schools is not determined by what the child needs in general but by what the child needs TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. You will need to find ways to get the PT/OT by linking it to something school related. For example: needs OT consult to be able to hold a pencil/crayon". This got my son an OT consult & some pencil grips. I have not been able to get the school to do more than the consult. They agree to evaluate him & help him with problems one at a time.

Good Luck!

Hi Lori,

My son Ryan is 6 got diagnosed in Jan 09. We asked for an IEP for him. In that IEP in March the dist allowed PT. In april (27-30th) we went for our 1st visit to Dr wong. She wrote a prescription and a report recommending Ryan to use the mobility scooter at school which he already has as the campus is big and he does a lot of walking. At the next IEP on May 6 even after providing them with the prescription and report the school has denied the use of any mobility device for him due to safety concerns. We asked if they could provide a non mobility device for him as the campus is big and they did not answer. Since Ryan is active and walking fine they do not see the need for a mobility device. What do we do next? Give suggestions please as I am really concerned and want to be proactive in preventing muscle damage.

Thanks Ana

Jessica,
His diagnosis DOES qualify him for an IEP! He may not need services yet (which I doubt!), but he should have an IEP and be 'in the system'. I waited to do Seph's for when he got to Kindergarten, but the school system was calling me to see what our plans were when he was 5 so that we could put it together. If he does not qualify for anything, how did he qualify for Early Steps?
Lori
Ana, who are you dealing with? The school or the school board personnel? There are many places that have IEP advocates that can help you answer these (what I consider) legal questions. We don't have one in North Louisiana, but most other places do. There are some on this board who could give you a link (sorry I can't). Also, find Brian Denger on this site and ask him about it, he stays very current on the law.

good luck! I would be furious if my school denied a doctors prescription. I don't think they can do that!!!
