On their last visit to Cincy, my daughter mentioned that her 6 year old son was burping a lot. They told her to follow up with his pediatrician or a specialist, suspecting heartburn. His pediatrician was hesitant to put him on heartburn medication right away because he said they would then be dealing with the side effects of that medication also -- prescribing just Tums. It seems like his burping and some heartburn are more frequent now. If your son is on heartburn medication, such as Prevacid, Prilosec, etc., could you let me know about the side effects you may have experienced. Also, who prescribed the medication -- your DMD doctors, pediatrician, gastroenterologist? Any input would be helpful. Thank you.

Justin(now almost 15yrs old) has been on Prevacid for awhile now. before that he was on Nexxium and then as a baby he was on liquid Reglan. He has never had any side effects from them. Justin was prescribed the meds originally by his pediatrician as a baby and then around 7yrs old his gastroenterologist started prescribing them and now either his dmd doctor or his pedi give us the script. Its just according to who we are seeing for a check up at the time we need a new script.

Terry, I know I am a bit late, I just wanted to put my input here, Trey (almost 6.5, DMD, on Steroids nearly a year) had the same EXACT thing. The doctor put him on Prevacid and it hasn't caused him any problems, but we have chosen to do Tums as well for the extra Calcium (doc recommended it as it bumps his calcium up by 1000mgs (and helps lots with the stomach issues!), he also does 1500mg Calcium Chews daily as well as 2500mg Vitamin D-3). Although our son is a 'dairy lover' it seems like his Calcium levels are a little lower then they should be so we do Tums only on days when we have noticed no beltching, no tummy problems right before giving the steroids, about a 1/2 hour, but when we have a dinner that has acidic foods (Spaghetti, bell peppers, or even stuff that is harder to ingest) we do the Prevacid.
I hope you have figured out what works for you! Each kiddo is sooooo different! Cori
