With my son's birthday soon and then Christmas on the way we are considering an electric scooter for him. He is 7 and still gets around very well. We thought it would be easier for him than pedaling his 2 wheeler bike. We think it may be a "fun" way for him to keep up with his sister and friends and still be "cool". We are not talking about the "mobility" scooter (yet) but something like an electric Razor brand with a seat that can be on or off. Has anyone purchased an electric scooter for their son and if so which would you recommend?
Thanks for your input.

Sounds great. I'm not sure what type of neighborhood you live in but this is what we did. We purchased our son a quad and he loves it. He's 6, 7 in Feb. It's the razor from Toys R US. I believe top speed is 10mph. Scared me at first...but he's a pro..we have a little over an acre so he can go, go,go...We had a chance to get a free scooter with points and we did get a razor scooter. My son is just a bit to short for it right now..He's about 48inches..Hard to ride in the grass (but will go) but if you have sidewalks, paved roads. he'll be fine. We took ours to the zoo for the first time and he was wild...but didn't take anyones heels off...he likes them both.. Someone also mentioned that scooters are not allowed everywhere (public places) may want to think about that..

Hi Cindy
We decided in 2006 just after Kevin's diagnosis to buy him an electric scooter from Toys R Us for Christmas, it is a Razor one and he tried to use it but finds it too heavy for himself. We have put him in front standing and his cousin stood behind him and rode around like this for a little while and he enjoyed it but as a kid, he has never ridden a bike. We also bought my eldest son one of the normal Razor scooters and Kevin prefered riding that one than the electric one. I think it could just be because he was too nervous using it and too scared to try it for himself. Keep trying to get him to have a go but he refuses unless someone goes on it with him. Maybe one of these Christmas's he will give it a try.
We had an electric motorised 3 wheeler scooter on loan and this was wonderful for him, he gets to keep up with his friends and can keep up with us at a shopping centre instead of having to be pushed around in a trolley the whole time. He was blessed with someone actually purchasing him a 4 wheeler electronic scooter and he uses it to school and around the shops and this is absolutely perfect, just keep in mind though he is 11 turning 12 early next year.
Good luck with trying an electric Razor one, they are absolutely fun to ride on, I have tried too.
Best Wishes
Jo-Anne
Dear Cindy

We purchased a "John Deer" scooter some years back, I will look up the manufacturer of the scooter and send you the info, it is a great little toy and works all over the garden, the one picture was a tthe zoo. The only thing that was different then is the fact that we had no idea that our little son actually had DMD. It was a cool toy and worked well for years. They outgrew it and I suppose I will reserect it in a year or two for lour new litlle son on the way. I would suspect it only needs a batttery and a dust off.

Hi Cindy,

Did you get the electric scooter? We are thinking of the same thing - for the same reasons. He can't keep up with his friends and they love to bike around the block. It is a big block, but thank heavens it is pretty flat. My problem is that we are in Canada and I can't seem to find anything other than the Razor 100 (which doesn't have the seat). So far, I've only looked online. Before I have one shipped, I was just wondering if your son used it and enjoyed it.

Hi Angela,
Yes,we did get the electric Razor (100 series/no seat) and it took him just a few tries to master it (he turned the throttle up too much first time on it and flew off it). He still loves it and he's 8.5 now. I really think it motivated him to work on his balance--just a few weeks ago, he rode a 2 wheel bike w/o training wheels for the fist time! He dosn't go far on the bike and has a huge fear of falling and getting hurt--but he did it! I would definatley recommend the electric scooter as long as he wears helmet and elbow/knee pads--especially whle learning!

We just got Seth (8 yrs old) the Razor E100-the one with no seat. He loves it! He saved up for it and bought it himself. He was a bit wobbly right at first but caught on pretty quickly. The first day his leg was a little sore because he was so tense trying to figure it out at first, but he hasn't complained of that since.
Our son is 14 and currently uses a power wheel chair. We got him the Razor scooter so he could keep up with his friends. It was the best thing. Instead of being sad that he couldn't keep up with them he was proud to hand with them again. One thing we did do though was not let everyone ride it. What was happening was the other kids were taking turns riding his scooter and he was left sitting on the curb again. After a while the kids understood.
Jacob got the Razor E100 a few days ago. He used it at the local MDC walk and loved it. Then he used it with his friends when they went out biking, but came back to get his bike after a short trip on the scooter. He said he was nervous on the "hills" with only front brakes. We live in a pretty flat area so I think he just needs to get used to the brakes. I'm going to take him out for practice and I hope he gets used to it. We have also considered the electric bike converter but haven't been able to find one for an 18 inch bike. The 20 inch bike is too big and the 16 inch is too small. If the scooter doesn't work we'll have to look into the electric bike a bit more. I think he will be happy once he gets more practice.

We, too, have told his friends that they can not use it.

Hi Angela,

We're in Canada too, and I see there are Razor 300's and 400's with the seat, but they seem really pricey. On-line says Walmart can special order one, and I think also carried by Sears. Was wondering if you did get one, or what happened with your situation. Would like to try one out before actually purchasing, ya know?

We have a mobility scooter which is great, but he kinda feels like a grandpa in it. This would be so much cooler for a kid. Summer is coming...

Hi Andrea,

I'm glad you posted a photo of your son on the mobility scooter.  Jacob was refusing to consider one but when I showed him a picture of your son, he said he'd reconsider (if it has 3 wheels and goes 20 miles/hour - lol).  He is trying skateboarding now that we have a new skate park in town - it is absolutely stressing me out.  Still not using the Razor 100 though...

Hello Angela,

The scooter goes pretty fast when set to "jack rabbit", you would have to jog to keep up. We have to force him to put it down to "tortoise" in a crowd so there's less chance of him running into someone. It also has this annoying little horn that he loves to beep! Now that he has his own (not a borrowed one from MDC) we were starting to think about getting flames painted on it, or something to liven it up and "youngify" it.

Take care.

Andrea

Thanks Andrea.  I'll let Jacob know it has some speed.  He's not a speed demon in any event.  I've already told him it needs 4 wheels though.  We're still looking at an electric bike so it'll be a bit before we get a scooter.  I didn't know MDC loaned them.  I'll have to call our district.  It would be great to try one out for a bit.

Best regards,

Angela
