My son recently turned 7 and never had behavior issues..was on 18 mg...calcort and I recently tried to increase and everytime I do, he gets in trouble at school...so I only increased by 1/2 pill...he still seems to be off a little hyper...will he settle down or as the dosage increases will his behavior change as well...what can I do to calm him down...he like to hit....Do you suggest I try to increase in the summer while out of school and hope he's calm by Aug back to school??

Thanks
Darcy

Are you increasing for any particular reason? Sam has been on 15mg since diagnosis (almost 4 years ago). Weight-wise, he could go up to 18mg, but since he's declining in function, Dr. Wong is having us leave it be. Just curious. But if we were to increase, I would definitely do it during summer or some other break.
Nicolas is on 18 mg of deflazacort and turns 7 in June. We noticed some behavior issues as well. Sometimes he hits, and it's almost as if he's in shock that he hit another kid. he says sorry right away, and when asked why he hit, he says he doesn't know. sometimes he would say his brain made him do it. We spoke with Dr. Wong and Dr. Biggar and his pediatrician who is known for diagnosing ADD & ADHD. Nicolas doesn't have those issues. Dr. Biggar suggested switching from giving him steroids in a.m. to giving him at dinner or a bit before bedtime. That seems to have worked well. We still get an episode or two of him hitting for no reason.... but it's become a lot less than what was usual. Also, you might want to speak with his doctor and when you notice an episode of hitting, take him to a side and talk with him. I hope you get some good answers!!
"but since he's declining in function

Sorry, on my post above, I'm meant since he's NOT declining in function.
I know I've posted this before, but, I gave something to Kelvin for a healthy supplement reason and it helped, and I mean tons. His outbursts and aggression nearly quit, entirely. He was actually bad daily, even before steroids (which did make it a bit more intensive). He takes 1 teaspoon of Barleans, Children's Fruit Flavor, Pure Cod Liver Oil DHA/EPA Omega 3, 6 and 9. It changed him 100%. I then tried to figure out what changed him and came across tons of studies on DHA/EPA and the effects that it has on children with ADD/ADHD as well as other behavior issues and Autism. It was amazing to see results of what it can do and what it did for Kelvin. The research didn't involve Barleans brand, just the DHA/EPA Omega 3, 6 and 9. Michelle
This is the webpage: http://www.barleans.com/omega_kids.asp Which product is it? We've been on prednisone about 40 days now and I've already had 3 reports from school about hitting, etc. that need to be addressed.

It is the Fresh Catch Kids DHA fruit flavor. It says give 1/2 teaspoon, but I accidentally started giving 1 teaspoon (which should be ok not to exceed to much vitamin - I can't be certain), but, it was when I changed to 1 teaspoon that he changed 100%. Kelvin had been hitting, throwing stuff, just driving us crazy, and you really wouldn't believe how he changed. It is the only thing I had changed. Of course, it could be a change in age or something else, but I swear by it. I buy this at a local vitamin store in the refrig. section. I haven't ordered it online, but I do pay the same as listed. Michelle
About how long would you say it took before you started to see a change at the one teaspoon dose? You can email me directly at michelle-parker@hotmail.com. Thanks so much for the feedback. Just put DHA in the subject line in case you get caught in my spam filter ;-)

I saw big changes in a few weeks (not sure of exact time, as I accidentally started giving 1 tsp. instead of 1/2 of one) and I knock on wood, as he's been great for 5 months or so already. The teachers keep telling me as well. Michelle
