Who considers themselves to be an expert in letter writing?

I approached Will from PPMD with this idea and he said if we think it would work coming from parents, families and friends of DMD/BMD boys we should go for it.

So here is my idea:

We get someone to write a very informative but short and to the point letter about DMD/BMD, Pat and PPMD and why Oprah needs to do a show on this. Once the letter is written it gets posted on the board for everyone to copy and paste it into their emails.

Here's the catcher! We all start to send these letters from all over the world and we send one every hour on the hour till someone gets a positive reply!

Is there anyone willing to give the letter a shot? I could write it but I tend to be too wordy as you can see from this post:)

I just got this email from Will and thought I would add this onto this post:

"In my opinion, it would be a stronger statement to start off with a joint letter written by a handful of parents and grandparents, and then follow up individually…but I think it may be stronger if the initial outreach comes from families rather than someone at PPMD, since we’ve already reached out to the show so many times."

Ok, I read each of the letters submitted and I have some questions/suggestions. Do you think asking for Pat to be a guest on the show in the opening statement will automatically 'turn them off' to continue reading? Should Duchenne be explained first? Also, I think adding a 'personal touch' means including more information about each of our children. Aren't they the ones that will tug at the heart strings? Maybe organizing the letter into three paragraphs that include: 1. Information about Duchenne, 2. Information about Pat, and then 3. Info about our kids (and of course closing with great thanks). And, what about targeting this letter to celebrities in general, not only ones with talk shows...do we need a different letter? I think getting anyone to hear our stories and fight for us is a win! Maybe if we get some others to back us up, then we'll have a better chance of being televised in any capacity. Just some thoughts. I would attempt to submit my version, but when I have 'edited' writings in the past, I have had a tendency to rewrite the whole darn thing! LOL!

Paul,
Thanks for doing this for us! You were certainly volunteered for good reason!
Hi Rhiannon and everyone,

You guys are making great suggestions!! Before we go any further in the editing process I want to explain something, my husband contacted a special friend before starting to write. This friend made a living booking shows (he now does something else). His suggestions were to state what you want in the first sentence. He explained the staff usually will end up reading the entire letter but they want to know what you are asking for right off. Also, we can't put too much personal info about each child because it might become too long a letter. We are trying to get everything into 3 paragraphs. I do think, if they actually book Pat, the opportunity to tell personal stories will come then. Another good suggestion our friend made was to say "when" you book Pat, not "please book Pat" or "if you book Pat". His reason was obvious - they respond better.

Just more stuff to think about while making changes.
Christian- I loved your version!

Also, I think this letter will end up being flexible enough to go out to more than Oprah. This letter could be sent as a starter and like Will said- we can then make a "personal story" letter as a follow up to the first one. If we do write letters with our personal stories probably they should hit the studios within a day or so of them receiving the first letter...

more food for thought-
cheryl

That makes sense.

Another thought to consider is hiring a professional for this. Similar to how PPMD has employed a professional lobbyist for advocacy at the government level, employ an agent or representative of some type to shop the idea around for more media attention. An agent would likely have personal contacts, which will get the idea direct consideration by the people that make the decisions.

Maybe you could even get somebody to take it on pro bono, or pay them by the booking, or something like that.
Cheryl,
Thanks for answering my questions! Just let me know when it's ready...I'm gathering my 'troops' on this end! LOL!
I'm just reading all of this and wanted to say I am very much behind this effort and think it's a great idea!

Someone may have already mentioned this, but I know that a while back I saw a link to www.contactanycelebrity.com on the message board. It says "Our exclusive online database gives you the best mailing address, agent, manager, publicist and charitable cause for over 54,565 celebrities worldwide plus over 7,000 celebrity representatives and over 4,000 entertainment companies with phone, fax and email addresses."

I have no personal experience with the site, but it looks like it might be a good way to get some celebrity contact information. Anyone else know anything about it?

I am very much looking forward to being a part of this. Great job to all of you in getting this started!

Thanks Emily:

That site is amazing if it works. Go to the Charities and Nonprofits page and read it.
I am starting to work on the list today.
I hope to have the list done by Sunday.
I just checked out the site and they are doing a 7 day trial for $1.00 so I will join today and get as many as I can in 7 days starting at the beginning of the alphabet. If I can't get all the way thru is there any out there who wants to divide the alphabet in 1/2 with me?
I am going to go for any celebrities that seem viable to me.

I thought that the plan was to get Pat Furlong a guest slot on one of the daytime chat shows. Each of those shows is sure to have a website and a "contact us" button that links to email and postal addresses. As far as sending this letter to celebrities at large, that's certainly a darned good idea. You probably only need to change the first sentence.

I just figured that if we are going to do this we might as well hit everyone we can think of all at once. Maybe even call our local TV and radio stations to tell them that we are doing this.
What does everyone else think.
I will get all of the contacts so that we have them and then we can decide how and when.

This is what I thought too. I guess that is why I was confused about the letter...I'm one the 'same page' now. But, I am up for anything! If you guys need me to camp outside Oprah's house to get her attention just let me know!...well, maybe not camp, but stay at a nice hotel near by? LOL!

Okay so I've just spent 7 hours in the contactanycelebrity website. They have all kinds of celebrities, not just movie or tv.

Would you believe out of the thousands of people listed there when I did a search for Muscular Dystrophy as being their charity only four names came up.

Kevin Costner, Jay Leno, Jerry Lewis, ZZ Top, yes ZZ Top.

How disheartening is that!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway I've got all of the talk show hosts contact info that were on this site and I've got big name movie and tv starts, comedians, producers, writers. I also copied down a couple of local sports players and this may sound crazy but I printed out all of the celebrity stylists and their contact info. I thought maybe we could unite them to talk to their clients.

If anyone wants contact info on anybody please let me know.

The lists include:

Activists, Admirals, Anchors, Animators, Archeologists, Archetects, Artists, Astronauts, Athletes, Atty. Generals, Ballerinas, Baseball Players, Basketball Players, Beauty Pagent Winners, Billiard Players, Biologists, Bollywood, Bowlers, Boxers, Business Persons, Captains, Cartoonists, Chefs, Coreographers, Cinematograpers, Civil Rights Activists, Coaches, Comedians, Composers, Conductors, Congressmen, Correspondents, Cosmonauts, Cricketeers, Critics, Dancers, Designers, Diplomats, Directors, DJs, Doctors, Dog Sled Racers, Economists, Editors, Educators, Engineers, Entertainers, Ex-Congressman, Ex-Firstladies, Ex-Governers, Ex-Presidents, Ex-Senators, Ex-Vice Presidents, Fashion Designers, Figure Skaters, Filmmakers, Financiers, First Lady, Fishermen, Fitness Experts, Football Coaches, Football Executives, Football Players, Game Show Hosts, Generals, Geophysicists, Golpers, Government Officials, Governers, Gymnasts, Heirs/Heiresses, Historians, Hockey Players, Horse Racers, Internet Stars, Inventors, Jockeys, Internet Stars, Judges, Kings, Lawyers, Linguists, Live Shows, Magicians, Mathemeticians, Misc., Models, Motivational Speakers, Motorcycle Riders, Mountaineers, Musical Groups, Musical Directors, Musicians, Nobel Prize Laureates, Oceanographers, Olympic Athletes, Opera Singers, Philanthropists, Photographers, Physicists, Politicians, President, Prime Ministers, Princes, Princesses, Producers , Psychics, Publishers, Race Car Drivers, Radio Personalities, Reality TV Stars, Referees, Religious Leaders, Rodio Riders, Royalty, Rugby Players, Scientists, Secretaries, Senators, Skateboarders, Skiers, Snowboarders, Soccer Players, Songwriters, Special Effects Designers, Speed Skaters, Sportscasters, Stylists, Swimmers, Talk Show Hosts, Television Hosts, Tennis Players, Track Athletes, Vice Presidents, Voice Over Artists, Volleyball Players, War Heros, World Record Holders, Wrestlers, Writers, Yatchsmen and a partridge in a pear tree. ( Just kidding about the last one after 6 hours I'm loopy)

Anyway to have only 4 people listing Musculary Dystrophy as a general cause we need to do something!!!!!

It will take me a few days to get everything in an orderly list. Alot of them have no email address but have fax numbers and phone numbers and snail mail address.

The list will be fairly long so everyone can email me and then I will email it back to them instead of posting in on the board if everyone thinks that is best.
My email address is rhinsu@hotmail.com

I love ZZ Top! LOL!
